The word axis was originally an Italian-German statement of common interest. It later became the name of the Axis Powers which includes Japan soon after. The Axis Powers consisted of Germany, Italy, and Japan. These powers were obviously fighting the Allied powers. The word Axis in Latin means just that of an axle. Like the earth spins on an axis. I don't know if this played any significance in coming up with the name. The Germans and the Japanese thought they were superior so maybe they thought everyone else spun around them as the axis.
